Theresa May, the UK Prime Minister lost an important battle today.
The UK High Court ruled that Parliament must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU.
The ruling means that the UK government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty on its own as Theresa May had argued they could.
For Prime Minister May, today’s court ruling throws a big spanner in her messy Brexit works. Since the June referendum, the UK government has struggled to put a coherent Brexit strategy in place.
Prime Minister May had planned to trigger Article 50 by March 2017.
Now, following today’s big court defeat, all is up in the air. A general election is possible. If one is called, it would be fought on the sole issue of Brexit turning it into a second Brexit referendum.
If May loses her court appeal but avoids a second general election, parliament could put an end to her ‘hard’ Brexit stance. But this might trigger a leadership challenge from far right making the entire Brexit affair one bigger mess than it is currently.
One thing is for certain, Brexit means only one thing, a big royal mess!
